A son’s “love letter” to his gay father — played by the onetime Capt. Von Trapp, Christopher Plummer — and a documentary on the coming-out of homegrown country singer Chely Wright are among the highlights of the Kansas City Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.
This year’s showcase, opening Friday and running through June 30 at the Tivoli Cinemas in Westport, will feature the local premieres of 28 films.
Festival director Jamie Rich says that over the event’s dozen years, moviegoers’ access to films has changed dramatically, but directors still find festivals to be good ways to introduce their work.
One of those directors, Brian Pelletier, will be on hand June 28 for the screening of his comedy “Fishnet,” kind of a hybrid between “Thelma and Louise” and “Sister Act.”
Festivals also offer something you can’t get from Netflix, Hulu or the Logo channel.
“There is something about seeing a film with a like-minded audience,” Rich says. “I’m not just talking about an LGBT audience, because we have a lot of straight people who come to the festival as well. The movie feels different. It becomes a shared experience.”
